Russell Brand Back For 2009 VMAs

British comedian-actor Russell Brand is returning to host MTV’s Video Music Awards for the second year in a row. You know what that means – Kevin Jonas better watch out.

With the eldest singer’s recent engagement, it’s going to be hard for Brand to resist making another purity ring joke.

Last year Brand, famous for playing rocker “Aldous Snow” in the hit comedy “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” made a joke at the Jonas Brothers’ expense for the purity rings Kevin, Nick and Joe Jonas wear.

American Idol winner Jordin Sparks was not amused. “It’s not bad to wear a promise ring, because not everybody—guy or girl—wants to be a slut,” Sparks said after jumping on stage to perform with T.I., according to E! Online.

“I don’t want to piss off teenage fans. Promise rings, I’m well up for it. [But] a bit of sex, it never hurt anybody,” Brand replied.

This year Brand has promised to be on his best behavior.

“This year will be a controversy-free festival of love and discrete orgasms,” Brand said according to MTV.com

Then again, he told the Associated Press a different story, saying “there will be some controversy” and that “I’m gonna personally invite [the Jonas Brothers] because I love those boys.”

The 26th edition of the VMAs will take place at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall as well as at a number of other iconic Big Apple locations. It all happens Sept. 13 at 9 p.m. ET.

The 2009 VMAs will feature country pop star Taylor Swift performing a new version of “You Belong With Me,” a single from her sophomore album, 2008’s Fearless.

“I’m so excited that MTV and the VMAs have invited me to perform, because I think this year’s show will be unlike anything they’ve ever done!” Swift said. “I love incorporating theatrics into my performances, and the VMAs have always allowed artists to run with that. MTV has been so good to me, and I could not be more excited about this year’s VMAs!”

British rock band Muse is also set to show off their single “Uprising,” from the group’s upcoming album, The Resistance. The performance will be Muse’s American TV debut.

Additional performers, nominees and celebrity presenters will be announced soon. If you want the inside scoop, MTV recommends checking out the music channel’s twitter account for VMA updates. If you’re with Verizon Wireless, you can sign up for VMA text alerts by texting VIP to 8911.
