Madonna’s Tour More Sticky Than Sweet

This week has been full of some not so sweet situations for Madonna’s “Sticky & Sweet” tour. The roof of the stage being built for her show in Marseille, France, collapsed Thursday, leaving one worker dead and six injured. And on a different note, over in Warsaw, Poland, Catholics have promised to protest the Material Girl’s upcoming show.

The stage’s roof was about two-thirds complete when it collapsed gradually on top of several workers. The cause of the collapse was not clear.

“Since it did not collapse right away, that allowed several people to get out, to avoid being hit,” Maurice Di Nocera, Marseille city councilor in charge of major events, said.

One worker was killed and two were injured in very serious condition. Four other workers injured fractured bones.

Sunday’s show in Marseille was canceled because “rebuilding a stage, it’s not possible,” Di Nocera said.

The city of Warsaw wishes Madonna’s upcoming concert in Poland’s capitol was being canceled. The problem is that the tour stop falls on Aug. 15 – the Catholic holiday celebrating the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. That’s a pretty big deal for the Roman Catholic country.

Seems like it would be a perfect fit, right? I mean, Madonna’s 1984 album is entitled Like A Virgin. Guess not.

Marian Brudzynski, the leader of the Catholic group Committee for the Protection of Faith and National Traditions, is so outraged that he’s planning two weeks of protests starting July 31 in downtown Warsaw.

Poland’s ombudsman, Janusz Kochanowski, has asked Warsaw city officials to explain why Madonna would be allowed to perform on the sacred holiday as it could offend citizens.

Former President Lech Walesa also said he would like the concert to be rescheduled.

Madonna is touring Europe with dates in Spain, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Denmark and Germany through Aug. 29. On Sept. 1 she plays a one-off concert in Israel.
