Cell Phones For Concert Tickets?
Yeah, we know. The first question on our minds was how do they figure out the worth of an old cell phone? Turns out they already have that covered with a Web site devoted to appraising old cell phones and iPods – Ticketmastermobile.co.uk.
Redeem, founded in 1999 and employing 90 people across five sites in Scotland, Italy, Republic of Ireland and Hong Kong, refurbishes old mobile phones and resells them, often in third-world countries where landlines are not all that dependable. Phones that cannot be resold are dismantled into individual components and whatever precious metals might be in the devices, like gold or silver.
Here’s how it works. U.K. fans visit the aforementioned Web site to determine the value of their old cell phones and iPods and then request a freepost envelope to ship the gadgets to Redeem in exchange for a TM gift card of the predetermined equivalent amount. It’s that easy.
In addition to recycling mobiles and iPods, Ticketmaster will also donate £1 to the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy and Sparks children’s charity for every device recycled. Fans can also donate to this worthy cause by choosing an option giving the full recycle value of their devices to be shared between the two charities.
Cell phones and iPods are some of the more difficult items to dispose of, mainly because of parts that might be considered too hazardous or toxic to dump in the trash. If you’re thinking this is just another publicity ploy by Ticketmaster, stop and consider how many cell phones you’ve tossed away or stowed in a drawer over the years. Then consider how much those old mobiles might have been worth toward the price of a concert ticket.
