Lorrie Morgan Broadway Bound
Lorrie Morgan and Joe Nichols are set to star in the musical version of “Pure Country,” an adaptation of the hit 1992 Lesley Anne Warren / George Strait vehicle.
The show, scheduled to open in early 2010, features an eclectic original score that draws on new and classic country, as well as Broadway and contemporary music.
Helming the project is director Peter Masterson (co-writer and co-director of “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas). Music will be handled by Steve Dorff (Kenny Rogers’ “Through the Years,” Celine Dion’s “Miracle”) and lyrics by John Bettis (George Strait’s “Heartland,” Madonna’s “Crazy for You”).
Morgan, who will be making her debut on the Great White Way has a message for her fans: “Y’all come!”
“I never thought my life’s path would take me to Broadway, but when I heard they were creating a musical based on one of country music’s best-loved films, I knew I had to be a part of it,” she explained. “I’m very excited about making my Broadway debut and becoming part of the theatre community. I’m also looking forward to working with Joe Nichols. He’s an amazing talent and I hope country fans come on up to the big city to see us!”
Additional casting calls for the show and tentative dates for previews and opening will be announced in the coming weeks.
