Tenacious D Replace Beastie Boys At Outside Lands

Jay-Z saved the day at New Jersey’s All Points West festival by filling in for the Beastie Boys July 31 and paying tribute to his fellow rappers with a cover of “No Sleep Till Brooklyn.” Now Tenacious D is stepping up to the plate to fill in as a headliner at San Francisco’s Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival.

The Beastie Boys were forced to cancel upcoming tour dates and festival appearances after Adam “MCA” Yauch was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his left parotid (salivary) gland last week. The guys also pushed back the release of their new album, Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 1, which was originally set to hit stores Sept. 15. Yauch is currently recovering from surgery.

“We’ve been working hard on our hip-hop.” Jack Black, one half of comedy duo/heavy rock Tenacious D, said in a press conference yesterday. “Beastie Boys, good friends of ours, we went on the road with them to support Barack Obama, and I think there’s more similarities than differences when you put us together.”

Black warned fans to come prepared for the rock Tenacious D is going to bring when he and Kyle Gass close out Outside Lands’ Aug. 28-30 festival.

“If there are any dogs barking on the 30th, that’s just them sensing the earthquake of rock that is coming. I’m seriously afraid for California. There’s so much build-up that when we let loose that it may shake the foundations of the San Andreas fault line. When that crack in the earth happens, are you going with America or are you going to jump on California?”

The 2nd annual Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival, held at SF’s Golden Gate Park, will also feature acts such as Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Incubus, Black Eyed Peas, M.I.A., The Mars Volta, Modest Mouse, Ween, Tom Jones, Jason Mraz,Atmosphere, Built to Spill, Bat for Lashes and Brett Dennen.

Black said he’ll be sure to be check out Modest Mouse’s Sunday set.

“Modest Mouse and the D go way back,” Black said. “We go back to South by Southwest. Modest Mouse was all up our butt wanting to hang with us and were like, ‘Who are you chumps?’ If I could go back in time I would crawl up their butts and create a rip in the space-butt continuum.”
