First to fall ill was Depeche Mode frontman David Gahan, who was advised by a doctor to maintain complete vocal rest for 48 hours. Falling victim to that edict was the band’s show tonight at Shoreline Amphitheatre near San Francisco.

And in a second blow to Bay Area DM fans, the band’s tight touring schedule means the gig won’t be rescheduled this year. Ticketholders can obtain refunds at point of purchase.

“San Francisco is one of the most important cities to the band and we are devastated that we have been force to cancel this date,” Gahan said in a message posted on DM’s Web site. “We hope to be back soon to play for all our fans in the area.”

Next, country singer Tracy Lawrence was hospitalized yesterday in Nashville after physicians there diagnosed him with early signs of pneumonia.

The singer is being treated for the illness, but has been forced to cancel tomorrow’s appearance at Wildhorse Saloon in Lufkin, Texas.

The status of Lawrence’s upcoming shows in San Antonio and Norman, Okla., will be determined sometime tomorrow.

Finally, Whitesnake has pulled the plug on all of its remaining dates with Judas Priest.

Denver radio station KNAC reports frontman David Coverdale struggled through four songs at Red Rocks Amphitheatre Tuesday night before announcing “that he felt he wasn’t quite over his laryngitis he had been suffering from and could sing no longer.”

“I’m sorry,” Coverdale told the audience. “I tried, I just can’t do it.”

To cover for the absence of the band, Judas Priest and the tour’s other support act, Pop Evil, will extend their sets.
