It was only two weeks ago when stories of Spector’s unhappiness with his current prison accommodations emerged. The producer, serving a 19-year sentence for the second-degree murder of actress Lana Clarkson, wrote letters to a friend complaining about being in the same prison housing “gangsters and Manson types.”

But Spector changed his tune when prison officials interviewed him about his comments, telling them he wanted to stay at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison at Corcoran, which is located near Corcoran State Prison where Charlie Manson and Robert Kennedy assassin Sirhan Sirhan reside.

Spector is now slated to move to the Pleasant Valley State Prison in Coalinga, and no, that’s not the place described in the Carole King-penned Monkees hit from the ‘60s, though you can bet the song will echo through his mind at least one day every week.

However, prison officials say Spector’s move isn’t because the producer is unhappy with the Corcoran facility. Instead, it’s to make room for more prisoners.

“It’s not about Spector,” California Department of Corrections spokesperson Terry Thornton said. “It’s about getting services to other inmates.”

Thornton said Spector will be housed in a “sensitive needs yard” at the Coalinga prison.

Spector won’t be the only high-profile murderer at the prison. Erik Menendez – one half of the Menendez brothers convicted in a high-profile 1989 trial of the shotgun deaths of their parents – also calls the prison home.
