Tributes For The King Of Pop
The smaller of the two, which isn’t really all that small, is about coming up with an appropriate honor commemorating the New York subway station that served as the location for Jackson’s 1987 “Bad” video, directed by Martin Scorsese.
New York City Councilwoman Letitia James originally asked the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to honor the late King of Pop by either placing a plaque at Brooklyn’s Hoyt-Schermethorn station or adding Jackson’s name to the station’s name.
But the MTA refused James’ request, reminding the councilwoman that rules & regs prohibit plaques in stations.
Evidently the MTA refused the name modification as well, because James now has a new request – a station art contest honoring Jackson.
However, don’t hold your breath waiting for that particular honor to materialize. The MTA told James it only considers art for stations when the stops in question are being rehabbed, and the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station isn’t up for a makeover for another five years. So it looks like it’s back to the ol’ drawing board for councilwoman James.
