Renaissance 2009

Annie Haslam and Michael Dunford are resurrecting Renaissance, the ‘70s English band known for lush orchestration, fanciful lyrics and songs that reached almost Tolkien-like depths of myth and mystic.

Renaissance began in 1969 when Yardbirds members Keith Relf and Jim McCarty put together a new band to explore rock, folk and classical music. However, after two albums and a successful U.S. tour, life on the road began to take its toll on members and the group went through a series of transitions as it evolved into its famous ‘70s lineup featuring Haslam on vocals and Dunford on guitar.

The mid-‘70s would turn out to be the band’s most prolific period, resulting in such classic albums as Prologue, Ashes Are Burning, Turn of the Cards, Novella and A Song For All Seasons.

Joining Haslam and Dunford will be former Renaissance members Rave Tesar (keyboards) and David J. Keyes (bass/vocals) plus keyboardist/vocalist Tom Brislin and drummer/percussionist Frank Pagano.

Presented as “Renaissance 2009,” the band will play a variety of clubs, theatres and performing arts venues starting Oct. 6 in Annapolis, Md., at Rams Head On Stage. Oct. 8 puts the band in Rochester, N.Y., for a gig at the German House Theater and Oct. 9 is at NYC’s Concert Hall @ The New York Society for Ethical Culture.

Other stops include Glenside, Penn., at the Keswick Theatre Oct. 11; Alexandria, Va., at the Birchmere Oct. 12; Albany, N.Y., at The Egg Oct. 13; Harrisburg, Pa., at the Whitaker Center Oct. 14; So. Orange, N.J., at the Performing Arts Center Oct. 16 and Atlantic City at Xanadu Theatre Oct. 17.

Singer/songwriter Jann Klose appears on all dates.

“I’m thrilled to be performing these truly unique masterpieces again,” Haslam said. “These songs are a big part of my life and I will sing my heart out.”
