Rock ’N’ Roll Sucks

In his new film “Suck” actor/director Rob Stefaniuk has melded the world of bloodsucking creatures with the music industry. (Like there’s a difference?)

Stefaniuk, who’s also a musician, told Reuters he thought the pairing was a perfect fit.

“The metaphor worked so well with rock ’n’ roll – staying up all night, sleeping all day, the look itself,” he explained. “Dead people sell more records, rock ‘n’ roll will never die, blood sucking managers, it just kept working.”

Indeed. Wonder if Stefaniuk has read any of Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels, where The King himself turns up as a vampire named Bubba who’s not quite playing with a full deck? And let’s not forget Anne Rice’s Lestat, who made a name for himself (not to mention a lot of enemies) by turning his story into a band and a series of songs complete with music videos.

Stefaniuk’s tale concerns a band struggling to make it until its female bass player gets bitten and converts the other members, who then find the immortality and record deal that had been eluding them.

The 38-year-old musician first conceived the film after his mortality began to dog him (“I was getting into my 30s and feeling a little old. I came up with the vampire idea as far as staying young forever,” he told Reuters), but he had a tough time finding anyone who would greenlight the project.

Eventually, he found not only backers, but scored big time when he was able to get Iggy Pop, Henry Rollins, Moby and Alice Cooper to appear in the $3 million film. (I’m not sure, but I think a couple of those guys might actually be vampires.)

And now “Suck,” which premiered at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival, is already gaining famous fans like actor Bill Nighy (“Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Underworld”) who had this to say: “Iggy Pop is in it? Oh my god. Well, yeah, I’ll be there.”
