Apparently Bloomberg was planning on choppering to the East Rutherford, N.J., stadium in time for the evening’s performance, and sent pilot and aircraft to the location to scout out the terrain and conduct a practice landing, according to the New York Daily News.

It’s a good thing the pilot made that practice run. Reports indicate a miscommunication might have caused the pilot to miss the helipad, landing instead in the shuttle-bus parking lot at about 7 p.m.

“He was unfamiliar with the area and landed by mistake,” New Jersey State Trooper Stephen Jones told the Daily News. “The mayor was not on board, nor was he on location.”

But the botched landing attempt forced Bloomberg to travel to the show the old-fashioned way – by automobile.

But it was well worth the effort for Bloomberg. The New York Times reports Bono even gave hizzoner a shout out during the concert.

“He makes me very proud,” Bono told the crowd. “He also makes me laugh out loud. I love him very much. He’s come across the border to the U2 show. Give it up for Mayor Bloomberg.”
