Stevens’ manager, Simon Lucas, said the original surgery was considered successful, but the singer’s condition soon deteriorated, mostly because of infection and post-operative fluid accumulation around the heart, reports Reuters.

“Jon is in good spirits and following doctors’ orders, but will not be released from hospital until he gets the go-ahead from his doctors and surgeon early next week,” Lucas said.

New Zealand-born Stevens is just one of several singers who have fronted INXS since the 1997 death of the band’s original frontman Michael Hutchence. He hooked up with the band in 2000 although he didn’t become an official member of the group until 2002. He left the band one year later.

Aside from INXS, Stevens is best known for his work as the lead singer for Aussie band Noiseworks. He also received rave reviews for his portrayal of Judas in two Australian productions of “Jesus Christ Superstar.”
