Britney Skipping Taiwan?

Representatives of Britney Spears’ “Circus” tour tried to negotiate with the Taipei government to stage a performance in the city as part of a possible Asian tour, but talks hit a wall when the government could not find a suitable venue, according to Taiwan’s China Post.

According to the paper, Spears’ people wanted to use the Taipei Municipal Track and Field Stadium but the city government said it would be impossible because the stadium is designated for “athletic purposes only.”

Since there are apparently no other comparably sized venues available in the near future, the tour will likely bypass Taiwan. Asian tour dates for Spears have not been announced.

Taipei Deputy Mayor Lee Yong-ping told the paper that the Chun Shan Soccer Stadium is undergoing renovations and the Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall will not be able to host “large-scale cultural events” for another five years because of construction issues.

The government defended its decision by saying that prohibiting concerts from the Municipal Track and Field Stadium was a promise it made to the public in order to prevent noise pollution.
