Billy Corgan’s Thoughts On Swine Flu

In a recent post on his new Everything From Here To There blog, Corgan writes that he won’t be taking the vaccine – and if he catches a case of Swine Flu and ultimately dies from the virus, that’s between him and God.

“I do not trust those who make the vaccines, or the apparatus behind it all to push it on us thru fear. This is not judgment; it is a personal decision based on research, intuition, conversations with my doctor and my ‘family’. If the virus comes to take me Home, that is between me and the Lord.”

Corgan writes that this isn’t just about the H1N1 vaccination. He’s willing to question anything, including “the existence of God, the existence of me or you or Robert Zimmerman. I am willing to wonder aloud whether any of this we experience here on Earth is real. What is there to be afraid of in questioning life itself? I know God is not afraid of my doubt. That is why He gave me the faculty to doubt, to overcome its mystique to better know faith.”

Huh? Is Corgan trying to say that it’s possible that Bob Dylan is really just a figment of my imagination?!

Corgan clarifies that he’s not trying to say the H1N1 virus isn’t real because he has friends that have come down with a case of swine flu and all of them said they felt very, very sick. Although he believes it’s real, he also thinks “there is evidence to suggest this virus was created by man.”

The singer’s major issue with the Swine Flu is that he’s suspicious everyone is freaking out about H1N1 when it “has yet to show itself to be a grand pandemic.” Corgan points a finger at President Barack Obama for declaring a national emergency when he said it was, at this point, a preventative measure. He asks “Why declare an emergency if there isn’t one?”

Corgan rambles about the “propaganda machine” and adds, “Scaring the daylights out of you over a virus or an unseen enemy only weakens us. Calm, open debate, and logical thought drive strength to its maximum effectiveness.”

He then warns fans that the state of Massachusetts will soon take away citizens’ “choice to live OR die as [they] wish.” He explains that Massachusetts is signing into law a mandatory vaccination and citizens that don’t obey may be incarcerated.

OK. Now that’s just too much crazy talk, Corgan. Last month John Auerbach, the Massachusetts Commissioner of Public Health, released a memorandum titled “False Rumors Regarding Mandatory Vaccination for H1N1 Influenza.”

Auerbach told local and municipal elected officials to pass on the message that,  “There are no public health officials on the state, national, or global level calling for forced vaccination for H1N1. These rumors appear to be part of a deliberate effort to misinform concerned citizens about state and national pandemic response efforts.”

I guess Corgan forget to Google and check out his facts. Or maybe Corgan doesn’t trust the Commissioner of Public Health. After all, he’s not too pleased with President Obama’s take on the virus.

I do have to give Corgan props for telling fans not to listen to his medical advice.

“I am not a doctor, and I am in no way suggesting that you should follow any medical advice from me,” Corgan writes. “What you do with your body, what you put into it, who you allow to love it or hate on it, is your business.”
