Fan’s 1965 Beatles Photos Up For Auction
Gwyn Blanchard, who is now a grandmother, explained to London’s Times that she and a group of friends took a bus ride and then walked a few miles in the rain for the chance of catching a glimpse of John, Paul, George and Ringo on the southern England movie set.
“Everybody knew the Beatles were filming on Salisbury Plain at the time and me and a couple of friends devised a plan to get to the film set. It was a bit of a taboo to go anywhere apart from home after school in those days but we stayed on the bus as far as it would go.
“We then walked for half an hour in the rain to the film set and when we got there their Rolls-Royce drove by heading towards this caravan. Of course we ran after it and waited outside thinking we might get the chance of seeing them when they came out.”
Blanchard and her pals asked the Beatles’ road manager if he could pass along their school notebooks to get an autograph and they were instead invited inside the band’s cramped trailer to get the signatures themselves.
“I think they felt sorry for us because we were so wet,” Blanchard said.
She explained that John’s autograph is upside down because she handed him her notebook the wrong side up. Blanchard described John as “the chattiest. They were joking and laughing,” according to Reuters.
Ringo then turned the notebook the right side up.
“The pages were wet from the rain and at one point the pen didn’t work which caused me to panic a bit. Afterwards we were all giggly and excited and elated. It was a dream come true,” Blanchard said, according to the Times.
Blanchard came back to the movie set several days later along with her “little plastic Kodak.” The young fan took seven black-and-white photos of the Beatles while the guys hung out on the grass while taking a break from filming.
After saving the photos and signatures in a box for years and years, the mementos are now going up for auction Nov. 10 at Cameo Auctioneers in Reading, Berkshire.
Cameo Auctioneers estimated the photos and autographs may rack in 2-3,00 pounds ($3,300- $4,950), according to Reuters.
