Banton was arrested Thursday on a charge resulting from a DEA case in Tampa. The reggae star is accused of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine.

Banton, whose real name is Mark Anthony Myrie, made headlines earlier this year when gay and lesbian organizations protested his U.S. tour, claiming the artist’s past recordings urged attacks on LGBT people. Several dates were eventually canceled.

The performer’s Grammy nomination for his ninth album – Rasta Got Soul – is also the target of a protest lead by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation which has launched an online petition criticizing the nom.
