Cobain Suit Temporarily Sealed
The temporary guardians of the late Kurt Cobain’s daughter have asked a Los Angeles judge to seal off records related to custody proceedings with Courtney Love.
Cobain’s mother, Wendy O’Connor, and sister, Kimberly Dawn Cobain, who were granted temporary custody of 17-year-old Frances Bean Cobain earlier this month, have urged the judge to seal parts of the case to keep Frances’ medical records and details of her relationship with Love private.
Attorney Geraldine Wyle wrote that the documents in question largely relate to “Frances’ personal and confidential information, including medical information – matters as to which Frances has an overriding privacy interest that would be prejudiced unless the documents are filed under seal,” according to court papers.
The motion also notes “allegations of domestic violence,” and that a temporary restraining order was issued against Love on Dec. 11, barring her from certain behavior and coming within a certain distance of Frances or her guardians.
Love attorney Jim Janowitz told the Los Angeles Times Frances had been living with her mother until recently and the ruling came as a shock.
“We did not know that this was coming,” he said, dismissing rumors that Love was once again struggling with drug addiction.
A hearing has been set for Jan. 22.
