Copperfield Rape Case Dropped

Federal prosecutors in Seattle have dropped their two-year investigation into a woman’s claim that David Copperfield assaulted and raped her reportedly because the alleged victim is now being investigated for prostitution and filing a false claim against another man.

Police reports say the woman, a former Miss Washington pageant contestant, was questioned by Bellevue police in December for allegedly trying to extort $2,000 from a businessman for sex, according to the Seattle Times.

The woman’s civil lawsuit against Copperfield, filed last July, is still pending.

Copperfield’s attorney, Angelo Calfo, said the decision to drop the case confirms that his client is innocent.

“David Copperfield, his family and friends are relieved that federal prosecutors finally closed their investigation without bringing a single charge … ,” Calfo said in a statement.

“Her lies to Bellevue police support what David has said all along: Her two-year old claims against him are patently false, absurd and contradicted by each and every witness and by documentary evidence.”

The then-22-year-old woman has accused Copperfield of holding her against her will and raping her while at his $50 million private island in the Bahamas. The two met when the illusionist brought her onstage during one of his shows in 2007.
