Corpus Christi Coliseum To Be Demolished

Memorial Coliseum in Corpus Christi will be demolished since efforts failed to establish a swim center in the bayfront venue.

The city council voted Tuesday to proceed with the demolition process.

Mayor Joe Adame says it’s time to move on, after several years of attempts to find new uses or occupants for the structure built in the 1950s. The coliseum, with capacity for more then 5,000, closed in 2004 with the opening of the larger American Bank Center Arena.

The council voted to abandon redevelopment negotiations with a group that sought to convert the building into a competitive swimming center, with stores and hotel space.

Corpus Christi will now advertise for the demolition contract.
