Free Smashing Pumpkins Download

If you’re feeling glum that you’re stuck at work on Martin Luther King Day rather than lounging at home in your pjs, maybe a new Smashing Pumpkins song will cheer you up. Billy Corgan and co. are offering their latest tune as a free download for the next 24 hours through MySpace music.

“Widow Wake My Mind” is the second of 44 new songs the Pumpkins are recording and releasing for free as part of the band’s new project, Teargarden by Kaleidyscope.

To download “Widow,” simply click on the link on the very top of the Pumpkins’ MySpace page. On Tuesday fans can download the song on the band’s Web site in addition to the track being available through as an embedded widget that can be hosted on any site. Tomorrow the tune will also be featured on MySpace in addition to a cross-promotion at www.ilike.com.

Teargarden by Kaleidyscope is the band’s answer to the alternative of a traditional album. In December 2008 Corgan told the Chicago Tribune that 2007’s Zeitgeist was the Pumpkins’ last album, later explaining that “I don’t think I’m going to make albums in the old-fashioned way, meaning 12-15 songs, etc in one small package.”

The Pumpkins began recording the first four tracks of Teargarden by Kaleidyscope back in September and released the first song, “A Song For A Son,” in early December. The alternative band is releasing one song at a time with plans to release 11 limited edition EPs that each feature four songs.

“Because the songs themselves will be free, the EP’s will be more like collectors items for the discerning fan who will want the art itself, along with the highest possible audio quality available,” Corgan wrote. “The EP’s will be more like mini-box sets rather than your normal cd single.”

The singer has said the Pumpkins will also release a deluxe box set featuring all 44 songs.
