Farewell Memorial Coliseum

Days are numbered for the 50-year-old Memorial Coliseum in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The city council voted Jan. 19 to proceed with demolishing the facility after negotiations to convert it to a swim center fell apart.

The 5,500-capacity venue has been closed since the American Bank Center Arena opened in 2004.

The council unanimously voted Jan. 12 to abandon redevelopment negotiations with National Swim Center Corp., according to the local Caller-Times.

The city has already conducted an asbestos inspection, developed a demolition plan and cost estimate. Demolition should begin May 29 after the city selects a contractor, the paper said.
