Clocking in at almost 6 minutes in length, the video features artists such as Robbie Williams, Jon Bon Jovi, Mariah Carey, Rod Stewart, Susan Boyle and James Blunt recording the song interspersed with scenes of the destruction caused by the 7 point earthquake that struck Haiti Jan. 12.

One particularly moving scene included in the video is news footage depicting a child being rescued from underneath the rubble.

About one week after the earthquake, Simon Cowell said British Prime Minister Gordon Brown had asked him to help out with Haiti earthquake relief and that he would produce a star-studded single within 10 days. Rather than go with a new composition, such as Quincy Jones did with the 1985 all-star recording “We Are The World,” Cowell picked R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” as the song most likely to attract attention and gather support for Haiti’s earthquake victims.
