Thom Yorke’s Atoms For Peace

Thom Yorke’s untitled side project is back for a round of April dates and this time around the group has a name – Atoms For Peace.

The Radiohead frontman made the announcement today on the alternative band’s website, writing: “Hope you like the name. It seemed bleedin’ obvious.”

Atoms For Peace takes its name from the sixth of nine tracks on Yorke’s 2006 debut solo album The Eraser.

Atoms For Peace features Yorke, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, drummer Joey Waronker and percussionist Maruo Refosco.

Waronker has toured and recorded with artists such as R.E.M. and Beck. Refosco, who has recorded with artists such as David Byrne, Steward Copeland and They Might be Giants, is the founder of New York band Forro in the Dark.

The band played Los Angeles’ 1,970-capacity Orpheum Theatre Oct. 4 and 5, performing tunes from The Eraser. Rolling Stone noted that the October shows also included rare Radiohead songs like “Super Collider” and “Paperbag Writer” as well as new songs including “Judge, Jury & Executioner,” “Open the Floodgates” and “Lotus Flower,” which Radiohead performed in January for a Haiti benefit concert.

“We had too much fun to just leave it there,” Yorke said.

The April shows kick off with two gigs April 5-6 at New York’s Roseland Ballroom followed by an April 10 performance at Citi Wang Theatre in Boston. Yorke and co then head to Chicago, playing two nights at Aragon Ballroom (April 10-11), another two-night stand at the Fox Theatre in Oakland, Calif. (April 14-15) and a one-off at the Santa Barbara Bowl in California (April 17). The trek culminates with an April 18 slot at Coachella in Indio, Calif.

Flying Lotus is opening for Atoms For Peace.

Radiohead’s W.A.S.T.E. club members have the chance to get their hands on tickets beginning March. 2. The public onsale begins March 5.
