‘Gurrumul’ Gets North American Release

One of Australia’s biggest “underground” success stories will get a North American release this summer.

Geoffrey “Gurrumul” Yunupingu is a blind, indigenous singer-songwriter from an island off the Northern Territory with the voice of an angel.

His self-titled debut album, through small Darwin label Skinnyfish, was discovered by the media and went on to sell platinum.

It was released last year in Europe by UK-based Dramatico label and topped the world music charts. Skinnyfish has set up a joint venture with Dramatico’s US operations for a June 15 issue.

Ron Kaplan, of US-based booking agency Monterey International, is firming up a run through New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Toronto, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
