“Treme,” which debuts in April, was created by writer/producer David Simon, who also brought “The Wire” to life.
To lend the show an air of authenticity, Simon has cast more than a dozen members of NOLA’s famed music society, as well as some who’ve been touched by it. Artists lending their gravitas to “Treme” include Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, Elvis Costello and
Simon shared his impressions of Dr. John, aka Mac Rebennack, with New York Times Magazine.
“This guy has the whole history of New Orleans music in his head,” the producer told NYT Magazine, before also revealing Rebennack also has a language all his own.
The director and his crew were filming a conversation between Dr. John and his band, as well as a performance of the standard “My Indian Red” that was intended to be portrayed as a rehearsal for a Katrina benefit concert by the Jazz at Lincoln Center folks.
“Hey, Mac, you gonna call the Indians like you do on the album?,” horn player Ken Williams asked.
“Well, it might cause some serious confusementalism amongst the Lincoln Center set,” Dr. John fired back.
When it came time to write a script for the episode, Simon took a stab at replicating the colorful verbiage.
“We were trying to write in Dr. John’s Unique voice, which is something of a fool’s errand,” he explained. “I wrote the word ‘confusement’ in the script. Mac looked at the script and said, ‘Y’all are trying to do Dr. John.’ And then he said, ‘I can do it your way; it is television so it can’t be accurate’ – he said ‘ac-rit.’ And I said, ‘What the hell. Let it be accurate this one time.’”
