Skynyrd, Michaels Plot Tour

Southern Rock meets Hollywood glam as Lynyrd Skynyrd hooks up with Poison’s Bret Michaels for a summer tour of amphitheatres beginning in June.

While having these two acts on the same bill would be enough to entice even the most jaded concert fan, the folks at Live Nation have upped the ante even more by enlisting 38 Special in the special guest slot.

The addition of 38 Special turns the tour into something of a Van Zant family outing, what with Johnny Van Zant serving up lead vocals in Skynyrd while older brother Donnie sings and plays guitar in 38 Special. Both are brothers of Lynyrd Skynyrd founder Ronnie Van Zant who died at the way too young age of 29 when the plane carrying the band crashed during a thunderstorm in October 1977.

The tour begins June 10 in West Palm Beach at the Cruzan Amphitheatre, plays Houston at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion June 13 and lands in Birmingham at the Verizon Wireless Music Center June 17. Other cities include Detroit (June 24), Chicago (June 25), St. Louis (June 26), Indianapolis (June 27), Holmdel (July 2), Wantagh, N.Y. (July 3) and Hartford July 10 before finishing in Burgettstown, Pa., at the First Niagara Pavilion.

38 Special will not appear on the Chicago show.

Michaels has become quite the reality TV star during the past few years, hosting VH1’s “Rock Of Love” for three seasons and dodging Donald Trump’s verbal slings and arrows this year on NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice.”

“The band and I have been friends with Bret for years and are looking forward to finally getting to tour with him,” Skynyrd’s Johnny Van Zant said. “It’s going to be a kick-ass show complete with new music plus all the fan favorites.”
