The cause of death was immediately unknown but he apparently died in his sleep in a New York City hotel room.

Marshall’s work includes the famous photo of Jimi Hendrix setting his guitar on fire at the Monterey International Pop Festival and Johnny Cash at San Quentin. He was the only photographer allowed backstage at The Beatles’ last concert in 1966, according to the New York Times. He is credited with more than 500 album covers and was the photog of choice for Hendrix, Janis Joplin and The Rolling Stones.
