Delta Spirit ‘History From Below’ Tour

Once Delta Spirit wraps up this month’s “Barnstorming Tour” the indie rock band has plans to trade in barns for more typical venues as it hits the road in support of its sophomore album.

History From Below, Delta Spirit’s follow up to its 2008 debut Ode to Sunshine, is set for release June 8.

The album was recorded at Prairie Sun Studio C in Cotati, Calif., the studio Tom Waits has used almost exclusively since 1991. History From Below’s 11 tracks were produced by Eli Thomson and My Morning Jacket keyboardist Bo Koster.

“All we wanted to do is put the record together one song at a time,” Delta Spirit singer/guitar Matthew Vasquez explains. “It’s been three years of straight touring off our last record so most of the songs were written in hotel rooms and tested in front of an audience. We spent six months of this last year making a record that sums up three years of growing up.”

On April 27 Delta Spirit joins Ra Ra Riot, Nathaniel Rateliff, Pearly Gate Music and in the third annual “Barnstorming Tour.” The five-date trek includes four gigs at rustic barns in Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois along with a show at an established venue.

Delta Spirit’s summer headlining tour in support of History From Below begins June 8 at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, Calif., and concludes back on the West Coast July 24 with a show at Velvet Jones in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Additional dates include Neumos in Seattle (June 11), Bluebird Theater in Denver (June 16), The Waiting Room in Omaha (June 17), Firebird in St. Louis (June 21), Café Eleven in Saint Augustine, Fla. (July 7) and The Loft in Dallas (July 15).
