Shed Footprint Spurs Complaints
A proposed amphitheatre near Brooklyn’s Coney Island has nearby residents fuming over news the plan will seize recreational space from an adjacent park.
The $64 million shed will commandeer the majority of a two-football-field-sized green space in Asser Levy Park, according to the New York Post, for its large concrete seating area and sloping lawn.
However, the new lawn apparently isn’t being designed for sports, but rather as “a passive open space for relaxing.”
“The park is going to be destroyed,” a nearby resident told the Post. “There’s going to be no place for kids to play.”
Parks Department officials leading the development claim other recreational activities such as ice skating and a skate park could take place under the venue’s roof when concerts aren’t being held.
A meeting of the community’s Beaches, Parks and Recreation Committee was set to discuss the matter at press time.
