Beck Honors Paul
Like many guitar slingers, Beck cites Paul as one of his major influences. As the years went by the two axe men became friends, with Paul often acting as a mentor to the Brit guitarist.
“When I first heard Les Paul playing ‘How High The Moon,’ I thought, man, that’s what I want my sound to be like,” Beck said. “Now, here I am years later and he’s still a powerful influence in all that I do.”
The venue for Beck’s tribute shows to Paul also has a history with the late guitarist. Paul played weekly at Iridium for 12 years and gigged there just days before his death in August 2009 at the age of 94. The club has been presenting special Monday evenings dedicated to Paul and featuring guitarists representing different genres and styles with 20 percent of the proceeds going to the Les Paul Foundation.
Presented by the Iridium and Gibson Guitar, Beck will be joined on stage by The Imelda May Band – the same band Beck performed with when he played “How High The Moon” at the 2010 Grammy Awards.
