Friday Fun: America’s Favorite Singer?

A recent Harris Poll reported that Americans love Celine Dion soooo much that we place her above all other singers, making the chanteuse the No. 1 singer from sea to shining sea.

Now before we go any further, we don’t want to give anyone the impression that we’re slamming Ms. Dion. She has built an incredible career during the past couple of decades, a journey that includes motion picture soundtracks, Grammy Awards, Vegas and enough No. 1 hits to last a lifetime.

But we can’t help but shake our collective heads at the fact that when asked, the majority of Americans polled chose a Canadian as their favorite singer. Sure, music is blind when it comes to international borders. We don’t ask for passports and proof of citizenship when we hear a song for the first time or discover a new band.

Okay, so Americans picked Celine Dion as their favorite singer. They must have picked an American for the No. 2 slot, right? Uh, no. That honor went to U2’s Bono – an Irishman! In fact, an American isn’t mentioned until you get to the No. 3 position where Elvis Presley tied with The Beatles, followed by Tim McGraw, Lady Gaga, George Strait, Rascal Flatts, Alan Jackson and Frank Sinatra.

We think you can do better.  America, who is your favorite singer?  If you knock the question around for a while, you’ll probably come up with a few answers the folks at Harris overlooked. Just drop a few names in the comment thread below.
