Boney James Recovering

Saxophonist Boney James is recovering from injuries after being rear-ended by a drunken driver May 15.

James was returning from a performance at the Newport Jazz Festival in California and was stopped in traffic on the freeway when a driver hit him at 70 mph, according to a statement.

Passersby pulled James from his car because they were afraid his car would catch on fire (the other car was apparently engulfed).

James suffered a gash in his chin that resulted in 14 stitches, a fractured jaw and two broken teeth.

His wife, Lily Mariye, who played Nurse Jarvik on “ER,” assisted with his recovery. “I always had a fantasy about my wife, the nurse, but was hoping it would be on Halloween or on our anniversary … not in my dentist’s office on a Sunday morning,” James said.
