“Favela On Blast,” Diplo’s directorial debut, tells the story of the genre, which has evolved over the past two decades from the subculture of the slums, or favelas, where a totally isolated language, style and group of heroes exists.

Featured in the film are rarely seen stories of MC’s DJs, dancers and cultural producers like Deize, Tigrona, Mr. Catra and Duda Do Borell as captured by Diplo and Brazilian filmmaker Leandro HBL.

“Funk Carioca” is a completely unique style of music that combines ’80s electronic funk, Brazilian music’s most diverse influences and rap vocals in Brazilian slang.

“Favela,” which was an official selection at last year’s SXSW Film Festival, was made by Diplo out of love for the genre, despite funding problems, unfamiliar territory and language barriers.

The documentary will be released digitally and on DVD July 20th through Diplo’s label, Mad Decent.
