Spend The Night With MJ’s Stuff
The world’s only official Michael Jackson exhibition opened May 1 at the Tokyo Tower and has already welcomed more than 300,000 fans through its doors during the past month.
“The official Lifetime Collection” features memorabilia such as the singer’s 1967 Rolls-Royce Phantom, clothes and stage costumes, his signature crystal-studded gloves and an antique piano.
Jackson died June 25 with the coroner ruling his death a homicide caused by acute propofol intoxication, with other sedatives a contributing factor. He was 50 years old.
The Tokyo Tower is marking the first anniversary of Jackson’s death with a sleepover, according to Reuters. Fans who are selected at random will have the honor of sleeping on the floor of the landmark, surrounded by Jackson’s prized possessions. The slumber party begins at 10:30 p.m. and ends at 8 the next morning. Tickets cost up to $1,000.
“The idea may sound a bit odd to Western cultures, but in Japan the tradition of being with the remains and possessions of passed loved ones on the anniversary of their passing is an important ritual,” said Hiroyuki Takamura of the Tokyo Tower.
Mamiko Morii is one fan who plans on standing in line for this one-time opportunity.
“The chance to spend the anniversary of Michael’s passing together with things like clothes he wore, things from his home, countless awards, and iconic video and stage sets will be an unforgettable experience,” Morii said.
“I have been to this exhibition more than eight times already and each time I feel more connected to Michael’s legacy.”
