According to London newspaper accounts, Adam Ant, whose real name is Stuart Goddard, was “sectioned” under the “UK Mental Health Act,” suggesting the decision to check into the facility may not have been his own. Ant suffers from bipolar disorder, according to The Guardian newspaper.

The newspaper also reported that a Portsmouth promoter said Ant “alienated and abused” the audience at a show at the Leisure Centre earlier this month. While performing a 30-minute set to raise money for starving children in the Philippines, Ant invited a four-year-old boy up on stage then tried to teach the kid how to sing The Who’s “My Generation.”

Apparently audience members didn’t care for the schtick and began leaving, resulting in Ant screaming obscenities at them, reports the Daily Mail, saying the troubled singer also asked if there were any Christians in the audience then told them to “f**k off.”

This isn’t the first time Ant’s mental problems have landed him in the news. In 2002, he threatened pub drinkers with a fake gun but avoided going to jail because of mental illness. He was “sectioned” in 2003 after he threatened to break down a neighbor’s patio doors and was later found lying nude in a café’s basement.

But Ant’s latest hospital stay hasn’t left him totally isolated. The singer posted a message on the Music Fix website updating his fans on his condition.

“Ant fans – please send me postcards at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, Fulham Road,” Ant wrote. “Please don’t come down here as it may upset the staff who have been really pleasant. I am having a well-earned rest at Her Majesty’s Pleasure and am painting and continuing being an art student. I have a great view and am considering gigs later in the year.”
