Robyn Talks The Talk
Robyn is preparing to hit the road later this month for a world tour in support of Body Talk Pt. 1, the first of three albums she plans to release this year.
The trek launches with a pair of dates in London: June 17 at Heaven and June 19 at G.A.Y. Other stops on the singer’s festival heavy calendar include Sweden’s Peace & Love Festival (July 1), Denmark’s Roskilde Festival (July 3), the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago (July 16), San Francisco’s Mezzanine (July 24), the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. (August 2), Norway’s Oya Festival (August 13) and The U.K.’s V Festival (August 21-22).
During the decade following the success of “Do You Know” and its follow up “Show Me Love,” Robyn struggled to find her adult sound, and in 2005 departed from the label that signed her at 16, BMG, to start her own imprint Konichiwa.
The result was Robyn, which showcased a more mature sound combining R&B, electronica and even rap, and netted the singer three Swedish Grammy awards and her first number one album in her native country.
Robyn’s full-blown return to the international stage came in 2007 courtesy of a revised version of the singer’s eponymous 2005 album and a pair of smash singles, “With Every Heartbeat” and “Be Mine.”
Body Talk Pt. 1 features production work by some of the hottest names in the biz like Diplo, Royksopp and Kleerup and is preceded by the steamy club-thumper, “Dancing On My Own,” which is currently clawing its way up the dance charts. Although the new album isn’t due out until June 15, the song and three other tracks – “None of Dem,” “Dance Hall Queen” and “Fembot” – are already available on iTunes.
So why three albums in one year?
“I got all these great songs, so why not?,” Robyn explained. “It’s been five years since Robyn, and I didn’t want to wait with a release until they are all recorded, so I decided to start putting them out right away.
“I also can’t wait to play live again and this enables me to tour and record at the same time. I just want to keep making music.”
Here’s the feisty video for “Dancing On My Own.”
