UCO Expands ‘School Of Rock’

The University of Central Oklahoma’s Academy of Contemporary Music will expand its facility and add more subjects to its curriculum for its second year in business.

The school, an affiliate of the ACM established in London 13 years ago, currently offers two-year degrees to students interested in music industry careers. Enrollment has reportedly gone from 160 students its inaugural year to 400 students.

Scott Booker, who manages The Flaming Lips among others, heads the school that will take over its building’s second floor. There is also a separate space for a live performance lab.

Students will get first-hand experience in performing and learn how to run a venue, Booker said.

Artists who have stopped by the school to share their experience include Roger Daltrey, singer/songwriter Simon Townshend, Joe Bonamassa and The Flaming Lips’ Steve Drozd.
