ABC Nixes Free Drake Concert

It was supposed to be one of those “Good Morning America” free summer concerts the morning TV audience loves so much. That is, until the New York Police Department learned Drake was going to perform.

Guess the NYPD is still smarting over that free Drake / Hanson concert at the city’s South Street Seaport last month where organizers expected 10,000 fans but ended up with twice that many. Factor in the 90 or so minutes Drake was late for the performance, resulting in more than a few ticked off New Yorkers throwing bottles, and you can understand why the NYPD shut down the show.

Quoting unnamed police and Parks Department sources, the New York Daily News reports ABC was going to schedule Drake for a July 16 show, but changed its corporate mind when NYPD said the Parks Department’s security plan wasn’t up to the challenge.

As to official sources, the newspaper quotes an ABC representative saying the network was interested in booking Drake, but never completed the deal. A Drake representative kind of contradicted that statement by saying there was a “booking place.”

Drake recently postponed his planned July tour of Europe, saying he wanted to be with his mother while she recovered from surgery.
