Big Star Bassist Andy Hummel Dies

Andy Hummel, founding bassist for Big Star, died of cancer July 19 at his Fort Worth, Texas, home.

Hummel, 59, had been undergoing treatment for about two years but recently found out the cancer had spread, according to The Commercial Appeal.

The Pennsylvania native left Big Star just before its second album, Radio City, dropped in the mid-1970s but occassionally reunited with his former bandmates.

Hummel’s most recent performance was at South By Southwest in March at a Big Star reunion and tribute to former frontman Alex Chilton who died of a heart attack March 17.
