Show Me Des Monies

The taxpayer-owned Iowa Events Center in Des Moines is providing Polk County with its largest profits to date.

Officials announced July 21 that the county will receive a little more than $536,000 for the fiscal year ending June 30.

The complex had 489 events during the period, including concerts by AC/DC, The Black Eyed Peas and Elton John.

Officials say the center, which opened in 2005, has outpaced expectations. The $218 million events center includes Wells Fargo Arena, Hy-Vee Hall, Veterans Memorial Auditorium and the Polk County Convention Complex.

County Board of Supervisors Chairman Tom Hockensmith called the windfall “phenomenal.”
