Keith died in northern California on Neil Young’s ranch, director Jonathan Demme told the Los Angeles Times.

Keith has been called upon by Young for recording and touring since 1971 when he showed up at the Nashville sessions for Harvest and immediately created a sound that became the signature of Young albums like Tonight’s the Night, Comes A Time, Harvest Moon and Greendale.

As a Nashville session player, Keith played on Patsy Cline’s 1961 hit “I Fall To Pieces” and performed live or in the studio with Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Willie Nelson and others.
