Glitzy Changes For ARIA Awards

The Australian music industry’s major awards, the ARIAs, have undergone a massive transformation this year.

After eight years at Acer Arena, the Nov. 7 event will now be at the Sydney Opera House. Performances will be split between its Forecourt and Concert Hall, allowing free-to-air Ten Network’s live broadcast to take in the spectacular scenery. MTV will cover the Red Carpet segment.

Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) chairman Ed St. John says there will be two new categories – best hard rock/heavy metal album and best adult alternative album – taking the amount of categories to 31.

For the first time, there will be four public-voted categories, to be announced in September.

In a move set to anger some members of the industry, the Hall of Fame event Oct. 27 is being moved out of Melbourne, where it had been for five years. It will instead be at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion.
