The bands involved are San Francisco-based Early Graves and The Funeral Pyre from La Habra, Calif., according to The Oregonian. The newspaper says the accident happened around 5:30 this morning when the 24-year-old driver apparently fell asleep at the wheel. The van then left Interstate 5 and rolled over.

While noting that some of the van’s passengers were wearing seatbelts, the newspaper says Early Graves member Makh Daniels was not one of them. The lead singer was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

Taken to the hospital for “non-life threatening injuries” were driver Justin Garcia and Early Graves guitarist Tyler Jensen. The band, which had just completed a gig in Eugene, Ore., was headed to Reno for its next engagement when the accident occurred.
