The above is taken from Presley’s second appearance on The Milton Berle Show. The story goes that Berle told Presley to leave his guitar backstage so that audiences could get a better look at him. The performance scandalized the nation when the band slowed down the beat, cranking out a bump-and-grind “Hound Dog” while Presley showed America what his body was capable of.

Presley appeared on The Steve Allen Show shortly after appearing on Berle’s program. However, Allen, reportedly not a fan of the new “rock and roll” sound, turned the appearance into a joke by having Presley sing “Hound Dog” to, well, a hound dog.
