New Dates For Joanna Newsom

The more than two-hour long album was released in February on the independent label Drag City.

Have One on Me is the indie folk artist’s third studio album and follow-up to 2006’s Ys.

In an interview with Time earlier this year Newsom explained why she chose to separate the album’s 18 tunes into three discs.

“I tried to sequence it so that it could be listened to in its entirety and had a progression that felt thematically logical and natural. In a way, the three records are like chapters in a book. Unless you’re serializing a book you wouldn’t separate the chapters, but they’re also meant to be these little self-contained segments within the narrative.”

Newsom also talked about the differences between recording Ys and Have One on Me.

“The experience of making Ys was quite intense and formal for me. I paid such close attention to every tiny little detail – the syntax, the lyrics, the distribution of syllabic entropies, the interior and exterior rhyme patterns – there was a lot of activity and it felt a little frenetic. When I was done with it all, I was pretty tired. I really wanted to allow my brain to approach music a little differently. When making this record, I had the feeling of being a little kid coming home from church. I was in my tight, scratchy sailor dress and my tight, scratchy patent-leather shoes. It was the feeling of tearing it all off and running around outside in my underwear.”

Have One on Me has received rave reviews with MetaCritic.com scoring the album 85/100 based on 35 critics’ reviews. Los Angeles Times rates the album four stars and Entertainment Weekly calls Newsom “the most intricate lyricist currently working outside of rap.”

Newsom’s fall tour kicks off Nov. 6 at Rialto Theatre in Tucson, Ariz., and winds down Nov. 23 at Carnegie Hall in New York.

Additional dates include Granada Theater in Dallas (Nov. 10), Paramount Theater in Austin, Texas (Nov. 11), Tipitina’s Uptown in New Orleans (Nov. 13), The Moon in Tallahassee, Fla. (Nov. 15), 40 Watt Club in Athens, Ga. (Nov. 18) and Rams Head Live! in Baltimore (Nov. 21).
