Azoff On Clear Channel Board
Irving Azoff has joined the Clear Channel Communications board of directors, according to a Sept. 27 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Azoff replaces Kent Weldon who resigned.
Azoff is not compensated for his membership but will be reimbursed for expenses.
Live Nation was once a subsidiary of Clear Channel, then known as Clear Channel Entertainment. The Mays family – father Lowry and sons Randall and Mark – have been on the Live Nation board. Azoff, on the LN board, now sits on both.
The New York Times noted Azoff and the person he is replacing, Weldon, have a common thread in THL Partners, the private equity firm that co-owns Clear Channel alongside Bain Capital. Weldon is a partner in THL, but he stepped aside because THL appointed Azoff, the Times said.
THL is also the pocketbook that gave Azoff’s Front Line Management the capital to start its rollup of other management companies in 2005, the Times noted. That is also the year that Clear Channel spun off its entertainment division.
