White Open Spaces
A recent Federal Communications Commission decision to free up a block of unlicensed spectrum for new technologies includes a welcome announcement for the concert industry: two vacant channels reserved for wireless microphones.
The order also requires wireless mic users who seek to use the new TV white space spectrum to register in a public database, sets up a separation distance between devices using the bands and requires devices to include geo-location.
The newly opened airwaves are considered prime real estate because they’re apparently well suited for mobile wireless devices.
“Unlocking this valuable spectrum will open the doors for new industries to arise, create American jobs and fuel new investment and innovation,” the FCC announced in a statement.
This is the first time in more than 20 years the FCC has made a significant block of spectrum available for unlicensed use.
