M16s At Mich. Game

An armed member of the military recently found a way to sneak onto the field as a member of the color guard during a Wolverines football game at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.

University of Michigan police reportedly allowed the National Guard member into the stadium after inspecting his unloaded M16 assault rifles and finding that he had no ammunition on him.

After he entered the stadium, the man made his way onto the field posing as part of the color guard until a member reported him to campus police, WJBK reported.

Police told WJBK the man explained all he really wanted was to come to the game. Because he couldn’t get his hands on a ticket, he used his uniform to gain entry.

“There wasn’t anything that we believe was done incorrectly or improperly by police in any of the checkpoints there,” a spokeswoman for the school’s department of public safety said, adding that while police are reviewing protocols, “the public was never in danger.”

Some who attended the game weren’t so sure.

“Whether it was good or bad, in a stadium filled with 113,000-plus, I don’t think that’s the way to handle such a situation,” a student told WJBK.
