Majestic Theatre Curtain Fire

A gospel music performance at the historic Majestic Theatre in Chillicothe, Ohio, was cut short Nov. 4 when a stage curtain caught fire and the venue was evacuated.

The Nelons had just finished their set when a member of another group, Beyond The Ashes, noticed the fire in the curtain overhead, according to the Chillicothe Gazette.

Someone reportedly grabbed a fire extinguisher and stopped the initial blaze, then set off a fire alarm to warn patrons and staff to leave the building, the paper said.

Majestic chief Priscilla Smith said fire personnel arrived quickly and put out the then-reigniting flames.

“We’re just so thankful. It was not a main stage curtain and they didn’t have to use much water to put it out, so there’s no water damage,” Smith told the paper.

Smith added that the fire may have been started by a light that was too close to the curtain. The rafters would be inspected to make sure there wasn’t any structural damage.

No one was seriously injured. Five people were reportedly treated for smoke inhalation as a precaution, according to the Gazette.
