Demi Lovato Rep Addresses Drug Rumors

Heavy Drinking. Partying. Cocaine. Punching a backup dancer in the face. A surprise pregnancy. After one too many rumors were published online and across the tabloids, a representative for Demi Lovato has released a statement clarifying why the singer quit an international tour to check herself into a treatment center.

The Disney star’s representatives released the following initial statement Nov. 1:

“Demi has decided to take personal responsibility for her actions and seek help. She is doing just that. Demi and her family ask that the media respect her privacy during this difficult time.”

The statement noted that the 18-year-old singer entered the center to deal with “emotional and physical issues,” adding that she “is looking forward to getting back to work in the near future.”

On Wednesday Lovato’s spokesman Jesse Derris released an additional statement:

“Demi Lovato is not in treatment for drug or alcohol addiction. As we have said since she entered treatment last week, Demi decided to seek help for emotional and physical issues she has battled throughout her life.

“She has taken this step in order to get her life in order. While we know many are interested in Demi and her life, we do ask for a modicum of privacy during this difficult time,” he added.

Reuters noted that representatives for the singer told the press last week that Lovato had been bullied in school and had previously battled eating disorders in addition to cutting herself.

Lovato was on the international tour as a special guest of the Jonas Brothers. She and the brothers had co-starred on the 2008 Disney Channel movie “Camp Rock.” The Associated Press noted that Lovato had been romantically linked to Joe Jonas but the couple had since broken up.
